Growing and Harvesting Grains
In Your Backyard

"Fruits, herbs, and vegetables get all the attention among gardeners."

"Backyard poultry and goats provide eggs and dairy (and perhaps meat) for some, but what about the staple foods? Wheat, oats, millet, and other grains are actually much easier to grow than most fruits and vegetables, yet we tend to leave those foods to large farms and buy our flour and cornmeal at the grocery store. There is a bit of specialized knowledge needed to grow grains, but there are a couple myths that have turned people off from the idea."

Learn the in's and out's of growing grains in your backyard!

It is definitely possible to do this with a little know-how and will power!

Reasons to Shop at Your Local Farmers Market

There is more to shopping at your local farmers markets than buying local. Although this is an excellent attribute to supporting your local farmers markets, a study conducted by the University of Iowa indicates that when we hand over the cash for our coveted and local Cherokee Purples (a fabulous tomato), we are engaged in a lot more than shopping for food.

“The surprise is that there really are a variety of reasons why people go to the farmers market,” said study coauthor Ion Vasi (University of Iowa). Those reasons go beyond the improved freshness and taste of a higher-quality product. In jargon-heavy academia, farmers markets fit into what theorists call “moralized markets.” In common parlance, we might say we’re shopping our values, or, put more politically, voting with our dollar. - The Reasons Why We Shop at Farmers Markets Are Bigger Than Local Food, By: Sarah McColl, for TakePart

Give Back to Your Soil: Planting a Fall Cover Crop

"With every garden harvest, the soil nutrients that produced the crop are removed and end up nourishing our bodies, rather than next year's crop. For this reason, farmers and gardeners have to replenish the soil every year. Adding fertilizers and compost is one way to accomplish the task, but nutrients can also be returned with a cover crop—plants that give back to the soil what others have removed." - Brian Barth, Modern Farmer

Learn more about planting cover crops this fall from Brian Barth's article found on the Modern Farmer website.

Think About Your Fall Garden...

"Cool autumn weather favors a long list of leafy greens and root crops, from spinach and kale to radishes and rutabagas. Planting fall crops may be the last thing on your mind during the dog days of summer, but growing a garden to maturity before cold weather sets in means getting started in mid- to late-summer, just as the first warm-weather crops start to peter out."

The time has come to start thinking about your fall garden!

So, what will it be? Lettuce, arugula, kale? Beets, carrots, or broccoli? How about all of that and more! Check out Brian Barth's article, How to Plant a Fall Garden, found on the Modern Farmer website to learn more about planting your fall garden.

In the meantime, here is a list of cool season crops to plant in you fall garden, along with the approximate number of days to maturity:

  • Lettuce – 50
  • Arugula – 40
  • Chard – 55

"Not all insects are nuances, pests, or poisonous. Some are actually beneficial"
-Anonymous

"Some bugs eat our crops, but fortunately, there are other bugs that eat those plant-eating bugs. The trick is to make your garden appeal to them. Just like in the world of mammals, in the insect world, there are plant-eaters and there are animal-eaters. Those species that are referred to as beneficial insects, though they may be cute (like ladybugs), are those with carnivorous tendencies. The bug-eating bugs are the ones you want in your garden. They prey on pest insects or, in some cases, parasitize them—tachinid flies, for example, lay eggs in the heads of caterpillars and then the larvae hatch and tunnel into their host, quickly killing them." - Brian Barth, Modern Farmer

"A ripe melon says ‘punk’ when thumped; a green one says ‘pink’ or ‘pank.'”

Mark Twain

5 Smart Farmers’ Market Hacks

Straight off the farm and cared for with love, fresh produce from local farms is unbeatable. Follow these smart hacks to get the best of the best at the farmers’ market—and keep your produce fresher longer at home.

Store peaches upside down Peaches are notoriously sensitive and bruise easier than a poet’s feelings. Keep them at room temperature, stem end down; this provides stability on a flat surface.

Look for a yellow spot on a watermelon to indicate ripeness Partly because unless you’re some kind of watermelon whisperer, the “thump test” won’t cut it. Miller quotes Mark Twain, who said, “A ripe melon says ‘punk’ when thumped; a green one says ‘pink’ or ‘pank.'”

Don’t store basil in the fridge Basil is a tropical plant, highly sensitive to cold. It will turn black quickly if stored below 40°; your refrigerator is likely set between 35° and 38°.

Keep cucumbers at room temperature Didn’t really know that, did you? It’s OK to admit—this was a new one for a lot of us. Cucumbers are also sensitive to the ethylene gas given of by some fruits and veggies, so keep them apart from the likes of tomatoes, melons, and bananas.

Dublin Farmers' Market: June 17th

"Tomato beds have an unfair reputation as the messiest, ugliest, most disease-ridden parts of a vegetable garden. To keep them from devolving to this sorry state, tomato plants need your care and support. More specifically, they need the support of a trellis, stake or cage, and they need you to train them to grow on it while primping and pruning their vines into a respectable form. If you do, the plants will be healthier and more productive—and more presentable when you’re showing off your garden to visitors."

Staking, Training, and Pruning

This week we are providing some tips on staking, training, and pruning your crop of tomatoes!

Modern Farmer's Brian Barth, explains this crucial step in the tomato growing process. Having staked, trained, and properly pruned tomato plants will help produce the best quality tomatoes!

Throughout the article, read tips on:
  • Support Structures, including:  store-bought and homemade wire cages; stakes; and trellises
  • Pruning
  • Training
