We want your feedback!

"A farmers market must be equal in its effort to support its customer community and its vendor community. To us, a market isn't an "event," its a source of fresh, local produce. It's an alternative to the grocery store and the place where your kids can meet the person who grew the tomato, extracted the honey, collected the eggs and so on. We want the market to be an experience in eating seasonally and appreciating the bounty of rich Ohio."

When I wrote about the early closure for the 2016 market season a few weeks ago, it saddened me to know that we were taking away an opportunity for vendors and customers who truly love the market. It saddened me to think about the future of this market and its ability to weather the downturn in support. Would the market be strong again? How could we attract more customers? How could we retain our vendors who experienced this downturn first hand?

Closing the market early was not an easy decision, nor a quick one. For weeks we talked about the market, the slowing pace of customers and our options for moving forward. We listened to all of our vendors and heard very clearly their concern for shrinking financial sustainability. We also heard from customers who were frustrated with the lack of variety and the decline of vendor participation.

Sadly, the decline of a market happens quickly. Customers decline, vendors decline. Customers decline again, vendors decline again. It's a vicious cycle and in the case of this year's market, left us with fewer than 100 customers and less than 10 vendors.

So, we close early and start to think about what's ahead for the Dublin Farmers' Market. But before we get too far ahead of ourselves, we want to hear from you! Click here to take a brief, 10 question survey. Have more to share? Email us at info@dublinfarmersmarket.com. We'd love to hear from you!

Dublin Farmers' Market: Closed for the 2016 Season

But isn't it a little early?

Yes, in fact, the market has closed earlier than expected. We apologize for any inconvenience.

To those who happily support us each week, thank you and we're sorry to say goodbye so soon. Unfortunately, the market simply does not have enough weekly shoppers to sustain our vendors any longer.

The truth is, a farmers market must be equal in its effort to support its customer community and its vendor community. To us, a market isn't an "event," its a source of fresh, local produce. It's an alternative to the grocery store and the place where your kids can meet the person who grew the tomato, extracted the honey, collected the eggs and so on. We want the market to be an experience in eating seasonally and appreciating the bounty of rich Ohio.

So, for 2016, we close early and start to think about what's ahead for the Dublin Farmers' Market. And because we want to hear from you, a short survey will be posted soon so that we may consider all the alternatives for the future.

In the meantime, here is a list of where you'll find your favorite Dublin Farmers' Market vendors:

We're All Connected  - Union County Farmers' Market
Made Without Grain - Worthington Farmers Market, Hilliard Farm Market
Oink Moo Cluck - Worthington Farmers Market, Bexley Farmers' Market, Clintonville Farmers Market

SaraBee Pure Honey - Worthington Farmers Market, Bexley Farmers' Market
The Coffee Mess - Lil Donut Factory
Hirsch Fruit Farm - Hilliard Farm Market, Bexley Farmers' Market

Again, we apologize for any inconvenience.

Dublin Farmers' Market: August 31st

What is Midwestern Cuisine?

"What would traditional Midwestern cuisine look like if it were elevated to restaurant fare?

I had started to wonder about this question after visiting restaurants in other states and abroad that were exploring the cuisines of their own regions. I’ve always thought that the local food movement, while welcome, was only scratching the surface of what it meant to be local, and that a different theme—indigenous food, for lack of a better term: food with a historic connection to a region and its people—would resonate to a much greater degree with an American audience."

Dublin Farmers' Market: August 24th

Ohio State Takes On Food Security

"The problem is persistent. And it’s everywhere. Even though its impossibly large numbers are void of meaning for many: Fifty million Americans don’t know where their next meal is coming from. In Ohio, 2 million people are hungry. And 21 percent of children here in Franklin County are food insecure. It’s a wall of hard truth, but there are windows. Over the next decade, Ohio State will invest nearly $125 million in food security, combatting this critical challenge from all disciplinary fronts as an integral element of President Michael V. Drake’s 2020 Vision for the university.

The goal is big because the shroud of hunger is worn in every community, especially by the most vulnerable. The goal is big because Ohio State, with its capacity to confront complex global challenges, can elevate the quality of life through a unique marketplace of ideas. As a large, influential land-grant university, it’s our mission."

Shake the Hand that Feeds You Dinner

"The Shake The Hand That Feeds You Dinner has been one of the most highly anticipated events for food lovers around Ohio for years. This joyful evening of celebrating food tradition never fails to amaze. Dinner guests gather together with a spirit of conviviality to celebrate food diversity and experience the reality of good, clean and fair food.

This year’s dinner on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 6 pm, will be different from the rest. In the past, we have brought diners to an area farm to better feel the direct connection with our food. The upcoming Shake the Hand That Feeds you will be hosted at a local food hub at the Columbus Produce Terminal — the distribution center for Great River Organics, also known as GRO. It’s a farmer-owned cooperative comprising growers committed to expanding the footprint of local, certified organic products in the Ohio marketplace."

Dublin Farmers' Market: July 27th

What are you getting at the Market?

"Faster than you can say “kale salad” it seems like yet another farmers market pops up. In fact, there are currently more than 8,600 farmers markets registered in the USDA’s Farmers Market Directory. It’s easy to understand why they’re popular—fresh, local produce, plus a chance to meet the farmers who grow your food, all wrapped up in a fun, festive atmosphere. But you may also be a bit confused by what’s on offer at the market. What does all the hype about local really mean? Is it organic? And should you care?"

Food Waste: The Ugly Truth

"Consumers waste plenty of food after the point of purchase, and we can change our habits to curb that — by planning our grocery trips better; by ignoring “best by” dates, which indicate nothing about the safety of the food; by saving those overripe bananas for banana bread. But we can help cut waste upstream as well by embracing broader aesthetic standards. Choose the odd tomatoes and the gnarly parsnips. Buy the undersized beets and the broken almonds. Tell our grocers and our farmers that we’d rather have a slightly dented butternut squash than a hot, dry planet. Support businesses that help get the less-beautiful produce out of fields and onto consumers’ tables. (One French grocer, Intermarché, began buying “ugly” produce in 2014 and selling it at slightly reduced prices at several locations; the success prompted the company to expand the initiative to all of its stores.) We can stop our valuable food — every pound of which represents a sizable investment of energy, water, labor and money — from leaving the system without fulfilling is purpose."

By growing food locally and giving under served urban neighborhoods access to fresh produce, jobs are created, local economies are strengthened by circulating dollars within the community, the harmful effects of food deserts are reduced, and consumers become engaged in learning how food is grown."

Shopping Tips for the Market

"Shopping at farmers markets is the easiest way to eat locally. You know where the food comes from: After all, the grower is right there and you can ask them. More than one shopper, however, has come home with bags of produce that went uneaten. A bit of planning can keep weekly shopping for produce at a farmers market fun and make cooking a snap all week long."

"Farmers’ markets are one of the oldest forms of direct marketing by farmers. From the traditional “mercados” in the Peruvian Andes to the unique street markets in Asia, growers all over the world gather weekly to sell their produce directly to the public. In the last decade they have become a favorite marketing method for many farmers throughout the United States, and a weekly ritual for many shoppers."

Local-Food Movement Matures

"Jon Glyn, farmers' market program manager at Farm to City, said the business has been maturing.

"I feel like we're hitting the second wave of the farmers' market movement," he said.

"For 10 or 15 years, we've had a lot of interest in farmers' markets. Every neighborhood wanted their own, and even old-school farmers that gave up on farmers' markets in the '80s and '90s are now coming back. Some of our markets are on their 10th year, and they've actually inspired this new generation of young people who are getting into farming. But they're having trouble finding spots at farmers' markets that already have established vendors, and everyone is fighting for the same dollars."

Creating a farmers' market is a science, Glyn said."

Local Honey is the Bee's Knees

The medicinal benefits of honey have been recognized for ages. Here are a few in case you're still unsure.

ALLERGIES A tablespoon of local honey each day can relieve the symptoms of pollen related allergies. How? Bees are collecting nectar from the very plants that are making you sneeze and sniffle, and so with that honey you can ingest small amounts of the very allergen that is troubling you.

COUGHS A 2007 study from Penn State College of Medicine that involved 139 children, found that buckwheat honey outperformed the cough suppressant, dextromethorphan (DM), in calming nighttime coughs in children and improving their sleep.

VITAMINS Honey contains vitamins and minerals, including niacin, riboflavin, pantothenic acid, calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium and zinc.

FUEL Honey makes an excellent source of all-natural energy that is superior to other conventional sources. Grab a honey stick for a quick pick-me-up during endurance events.

Double Your Dollars at the Dublin Farmers' Market

With support of the City of Columbus, the Franklin County Commissioner, Wholesome Wave, and the Puffin Foundation, Veggie SNAPS provides individuals enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) with a monetary incentive to purchase produce at the Dublin Farmers' Market.

Veggie SNAPS has benefits to shoppers and growers alike. They allow more customers the opportunity to purchase the healthy, locally-grown ingredients that had previously been cost-prohibitive. Then, some of their co-workers at Ashland in Dublin had tried some of their homemade creations and began buying them so, "We thought why not sell at the farmers market," Jennifer Picklesimon said.

We want your opinion!

Tell us what you think!

This survey is for anyone in central Ohio who buys and eats vegetables, regardless of where you shop. If you buy veggies at the grocery or at the farmers market or anywhere in between, we want to hear from you! Please consider donating ten minutes of your time to share more about you.

Here’s how you can help :

This market research is being conducted by Great River Organics, a farmer-owned cooperative here in Central Ohio. This is Phase II of a market research study funded by a Local Food Promotion Program grant from the USDA.

Dublin Farmers' Market: May 18th

"I think it's one of the most important battles for consumers to fight: the right to know what's in their food, and how it was grown."

Joel Salatin

Is it all in a label?

Labels are...confusing? Ambiguous? Misleading? Helpful? The answer depends on how much you know!

In an effort to help, National Geographic recently posted "An Eater's Guide to Food Labels."

Natural
Natural is not regulated or defined by the FDA, so the term can be applied freely to most processed foods or drinks. Meat, poultry, or eggs labeled “natural,” on the other hand, have to be natural.

Non-GMO or GE-free
If you care about whether your food contains genetically engineered ingredients, look to third-party certifications such as the Non-GMO project, buy USDA-certified “Organic,” or buy your groceries in Vermont starting this summer.

Certified organic
With a few exceptions, the agriculture department’s organic label means what it says.

Cage-free, free range, or free-roaming chickens/eggs
Look for the organic label, or GET TO KNOW a local egg farmer from your FARMERS MARKET.

Farm fresh or farm-to-fork
If you want “farm fresh” food, know your farmers market vendors. If someone is selling you pineapple in Maine in February and calling it farm fresh, ask questions.

Dubiln Farmers' Market: May 11th

"Anyone who imagines that all fruits ripen at the same time as the strawberries knows nothing about grapes."

Paracelsus

It's strawberry season!

Packed with vitamins, fiber, and particularly high levels of antioxidants known as polyphenols, strawberries are a sodium-free, fat-free, cholesterol-free, low-calorie food. They are among the top 20 fruits in antioxidant capacity and are a good source of manganese and potassium. Just one serving -- about eight strawberries -- provides more vitamin C than an orange.

Come and get 'em! Rhoads Farm will be at market today with the first (small) strawberry harvest.
